Answers to Questions Muslims Ask
Do Christians and Muslims worship the same God?
Both Muslims and Christians worship the one True God, the Creator of the Universe. This is the God who revealed His Word through Prophets like Moses, David, and Jesus, as acknowledged in both the Bible and the Qur'an. The name "Allah" is the Arabic word for "God," and many Arabic Christians also use this name for God.
Some have argued that "Allah" was originally the name of an Arabic moon god. Whether this is true or not is irrelevant. At the time of Muhammad, the Arabian people were worshipping may gods, but Muhammad led them to believe in the One Creator God. The name in Arabic Muhammad used for this God was "Allah."
If this term had previous connections, they were erased by the new meaning that was given to the name "Allah." Muslims today think nothing of a moon god when they hear the term "Allah," but only of the one True God, the Creator of the Universe.
Jews also worship the one true God, the God of Abraham. Jews do not believe in Jesus as the Messiah, nor do they believe in a Trinity (as Christians do), yet they unquestionably worship the same God as Christians. Likewise, Muslims do not believe Jesus as Savior or Son of God, nor do they believe in a Trinity, yet the common monotheistic heritage is unmistakably the same.
Muslims and Christians differ in many important respects in their understanding of God and how to know God, but this does not change the fact that they worship the same God.
